Hi Everyone
Well we made it through 2020 and we are now onto bigger and brighter 👍things for 2021! Today I wanted to share with you the color trends for 2021 by the major paint companies. As you go through the different palettes you may start to notice the trend is towards warmer, earthy colors and a shift away from cooler colors. I have to admit I've always been more of a fan of the warmer colors, I think they are easier to live with especially in our part of the country as we see so much snow and cold without adding it to our interiors. I think by adding gray to these warmer tones, it makes them current in today's homes. Without further ado here are the color trends by 3 major paint companies for 2021.
Sherwin Williams
I'm going to start with Sherwin Williams as these are the colors I work with most when doing colour consultations. For 2021 Sherwin Williams announced Urbane Bronze as their COTY.
"Tap into nature with a hue whose warmth and comfort breathe down-to-earth tranquility. Our 2021 Color of the Year, Urbane Bronze, captures that simple sophistication every space is searching for."
In addition to a COTY Sherwin Williams also provides a Colormix Color Forecast for 2021. There are several color palettes that make up this forecast but here are just a couple (if you want to see more of their color trends for 2021 you can check them out
here).
"Invite the beauty of the outdoors inside. Nature’s tranquility captures the calm simplicity we’re seeking, while warm neutrals and natural tones create a nurturing environment where less will always be more.
INFLUENCES: Wellness + Biophilia | Nesting | Warm Minimalism | Scandinavian Design"
"Like a treasured heirloom, handcrafted materials remind us that every great story started from humble beginnings. We’re taking in the rich experiences, locally and globally, to create an earthy palette that reflects where we’ve been.
INFLUENCES: Hyperlocal | Modern Bohemian | Natural Materials | Storytelling"
Benjamin Moore
Like Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore also announced a Color of the Year and a color trends palette. For 2021 the COTY for Benjamin Moore is Aegean Teal 2136-40.
"Take a moment to reflect and reset. Nourish the spirit with
comforting, sunbaked shades. Intriguing, balanced and deeply
soothing, Aegean Teal creates natural harmony."
If you take a closer look you'll notice there are similarities between Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore color trends for 2021. I've also noticed with my onsite and online consultations that we are definitely moving towards warmer palettes. I believe with us spending so much more time in our homes today we crave the warmth that these palettes provide.
Behr
Unlike previous years Behr did not have one specific COTY for 2021 but instead announced 4 Color Trend Palettes for 2021 (consisting of 21 colors) reflecting how we live and work today.
"As we enter a new era of the built environment, we invite you to discover the transformative spirit of color.
Explore the Color Trends 2021 Palette as you embark on creating dynamic designs to enhance the experience in any setting.
The colors curated in this palette ushers in more of what the world needs right now: Elevated Comfort."
Mindful Escape
Dramatic Reveal
Mindful Escape and Dramatic Reveal are just 2 of the 4 color palettes Behr announced for 2021. If you want to see more of their color trends you can check it out

Pantone
You may or may not be familiar with who Pantone is, and why I've included them in this blog. The company's most well known segment is the Color Institute. The facility studies how color influences human thought process, emotions and physical reactions and in doing so they provide professionals with a greater understanding of color and helps them to utilize it more effectively. This doesn't just apply to paint colors but also includes the fashion industry, automotive industry and of course also interior design. For 2021 Pantone announced two colors for this year.
"PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating, two independent colors that highlight how different elements come together to support one another, best express the mood for Pantone Color of the Year 2021. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, the union of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is one of strength and positivity. It is a story of color that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly."
